About the role We are seeking a talented Research Engineer to drive further innovation, development and commercialisation of our current and future microfluidic sensor technologies. You will also be a consulting engineer for these technologies. You will join an existing team of forty research staff, engineering staff and graduate students equipped with world class fabrication, testing and design facilities, together with instrumentation and analytical laboratories and access to sea going and polar research logistics. You will lead the design of in situ (i.e. deep sea submersible) microfluidic sensors through innovation and by improving current prototypes for marine and other hostile environments. This will include chemical (e.g. nutrients, carbonate, trace metals) and biological (e.g. cytometer, nucleic acid analyser, immunosensor) sensors. This sensor technology is deployed at sea, in coastal areas and in Polar Regions. These sensors provide data for use in environmental and climate modelling, in industrial applications such as Carbon Capture and Storage and for improving our understanding of the world’s oceans. Key responsibilities: • be a lead Engineer and technical consultant for autonomous in situ sensor systems and instruments for a range of projects and applications • lead production of peer reviewed publications, patents and knowledge exchange activities and contribute to grant applications • contribute to the development and maintenance of project plans • work as part of a team by providing training, engineering, fieldwork and administrative support • supervision of students within the team where appropriate. About you You must have proven ability in solving research, engineering, manufacturing and organisational problems. A PhD in Instrumentation Engineering R&D/design or closely related discipline or equivalent research experience in an academic or industrial setting is essential. Experience of microfluidic systems, optics and biological or chemical sensors would be advantageous. You will have a broad spectrum of skills and have a flexible approach, demonstrating your ability to deliver solutions to complex problems and to quickly master new techniques.
