Whitgift is a leading independent day and boarding school for boys, set in an attractive 45-acre parkland site in South Croydon. Remembering 1916 – Life on the Western Front. In the Great War, 251 boys and staff lost their lives. This exhibition will be a tribute to them, and their sacrifice. It will be designed by the School and, in addition to focusing on 1916, will also look at life on the Croydon Home Front. There will be displays relating to Edwardian England and the world before the War, as well as to Croydon and the surrounding areas at the time. The Exhibition will commemorate the War and will include a variety of artefacts from both private and institutional lenders. We have a unique selection of items that belonged to alumni of the School, which we will be featuring. We also have at our disposal many original military artefacts, including British, French and German uniforms, equipment and other items, courtesy of collectors of First World War militaria. A previous exhibition entitled Hidden Treasures of the Mary Rose, staged in 2009 by Whitgift School, in conjunction with the Mary Rose Trust, drew critical acclaim and attracted 35,000 visitors, 11,000 children. We hope that this exhibition will follow in its success. The Exhibition Assistant will help to ensure all aspects of the smooth running of the Exhibition. This will require a willingness to be highly flexible and to work in all areas of the Exhibition, moving from one area to another as required.
